Opened Heart
Healing Beyond Cure
When Dr. Mary Key underwent life-saving open-heart surgery, she expected recovery to follow a straight path. Instead, she found herself navigating fear, uncertainty, setbacks, and profound personal transformation.
What if recovery wasn't the end of the journey, but the beginning of a deeper transformation?
Opened Heart is a teaching memoir and self-help book that brings together the voices
of a patient and her cardiologist to explore what modern medicine often overlooks:
healing isn't simply about restoring the body. It's about restoring the whole person.
The Book
A Story Told From Both Sides of the Bed
In 2013, I survived eight hours of open-heart surgery. What followed looked like anything but recovery. It was a second surgery, months of setbacks, and a slow relearning of everything I thought I knew about strength and control.
Opened Heart traces that journey alongside the perspective of my cardiologist, Dr. Guilherme Oliveira, who has spent three decades at the bedside and in healthcare leadership. Together, we discovered that modern healthcare is rich in protocols but thin on presence, and that the most stubborn barriers to healing are human, not technical.
What emerged is the Spiral of Healing, a framework built from both of our experiences, patient and physician, that shows how healing actually moves. Not in a straight line, but in a spiral, you circle back to, again and again, each time with a little more clarity.
Over time, we began to see this pattern not as failure, but as part of healing itself. We didn’t see it first in charts or research papers. We saw it in people.
